Sometimes it pays to be a little over-the-top, which should explain the success of The Thirsty Wolf’s colourful “Unicorn Month” which recently ran throughout November. It’s pretty straight forward, for an entire month the popular Newtown bar replaced a typical Melbourne cup celebrate with a four-week homage to a different breed of horse, channeling the mythical (and totally real) unicorn to offer cartoonish specials including two new drinks – the Rainbow Bubbles and The Unicorn – and a pairing of fairy bread for a few bucks extra with any drink purchase. It’s been well documented how much we all love of fairy bread, so it’s no surprise that the bar have extended Unicorn Month due to meet demand.
Now Unicorn “month” will be on at the bar all summer long, with new drinks added to the special menu seemingly inspired by youthful excess and a good ol’ fashioned sugar rush. The originals are still on the menu: Rainbow Bubbles is basically freshly spun fairy floss topped with Wolf Blass Bilyara Brut sparkling wine; The Unicorn is a dessert cocktail of Malibu, strawberry liqueur, milk and vanilla ice cream mixed under a cloud of hand-made soft fairy floss; Gingerbooze House is a mix of vanilla vodka, Kahlua, house-made ginger syrup, whipped cream, milk and cookies; Loco for Cocoa is vanilla vodka, Frangelico, chocolate liqueur and nutella syrup; and Minty Melons is fresh watermelon, mint, Bacardi white rum, lime, sugar syrup and soda.
Beers, wines and house cocktails come with an optional side plate of fairy bread for $2.95 extra.
