With their debut EP gaining solid acclaim upon its release and their single “Eye to Eye” generating some great momentum, Sydney’s Wild Honey kicked off 2016 joining The Delta Riggs for a tour down the east coast – a perfect way to start a promising year! Spending the tour travelling along the Great Ocean Road, lapping up the sun and some killer shows, Wild Honey captured some snapshots of the tour for us in this exclusive travel diary!
After leaving Bondi around midnight on a Thursday, we drove through the night headed for Byron Bay. Nonna a.k.a Adam Dellagrotta had made a bunch of sandwiches for the troops, which were demolished somewhere outside of Gundagai in the early hours. Dog’s got the tuckerbox…
A friend at Lennox Head sent this through around the same time we were passing through after nine hours on the road, still bound for Mooloolaba. Needless to say, a quick stopover was arranged and afterwards we smashed some breakfast at the always satisfying Topshop in Byron.
A sight for sore eyes, this backpackers’ (Mooloolaba Backpackers) has a lot going for it. 500 metres from the venue for the night, a pool with hospital grade levels of chlorine so you don’t need to worry too much about what happened there the night before, and floaties for Adam (he hasn’t learnt to swim just yet but we’re working on it)…
Trying to fit everything in the back of the Hiace at load out was always a welcomed hangover cure. Nothing like lifting ridiculously heavy Orange amplifiers early in the morning and trying to fit three bands’ backlines into one van. Sammy Barron consulting on this particular pack, always good to have eyes on the problem at hand.
Taken from the 30 minutes of a 24 hour day where you actually get to do what you’ve travelled a long way to do… Southport was awesome, it’s first time we’ve played an all ages gig and we had a ball. This shot was taken by the immensely talented James Adams who has been going on tour with The Delta Riggs, capturing on film the madness of the road.
The Delta Riggs/The Belligerents/Wild Honey and a bunch of legends. Nearly every night after the main event, there was a raucous drinking session that lasted pretty well ’til the sun came up. Our drummer James Jennings solidly represented Wild Honey solidly throughout these conferences and masterfully moves from beer to wine, to spirits and back without regret! One of our favourite things about this tour was the people we met along the way, from Mooloolaba to Warrnambool. Stoked to see people coming out to the shows and supporting live music!
There were a few nights of the tour where we had to load out straight after the gig, which meant someone couldn’t get too messy. However on the bright side, waking up without a hangover and copping swell like this, it was definitely worth it in the end. Surfing Bells Beach and Winkipop is definitely a religious experience, second only to heading to Cactus in South Australia, I reckon…
One of many other postcard moments you can find along the Great Ocean Road. This comes courtesy of Tommy Eagleton, who skived off after the tour down the coast with his girlfriend. Taking care of business n stopping to smell the roses, the gentleman has touring down… The rest of us drove pretty much 15 hours straight, back to Sydney…
