When it comes flight prices, it’s all about competition. The more airlines flying in and out of a country, the better it is – for your budget at least. It’s a big deal when a major airline makes its debut in any market for the first time, and so one of the biggest news stories in tourism right now is Turkish Airlines’ long-awaited arrival down under.
Turkish Airlines touched down in Melbourne for the first time earlier this year, representing a massive win for the tourism industry in both countries. Notably, it also unlocks a new route for Aussies to enter Europe, just months before everyone jets off for that hard-won European summer.
The airline’s first flight from Istanbul to Australia landed at Melbourne Airport at 8:40 PM on Sunday.
Given Melbourne has Australia’s largest Turkish population, it’s also a huge win for those who want to fly home and visit family and friends this summer.
The new flights will be served by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner during the airline’s winter season, and an A350-900 for summer. As of right now, it’s a three-times-weekly service. Note that international flights from Australia to Turkey will go via Singapore, although it is expected that the new route will be nonstop once newer aircraft capable of the journey become available.
While Melbourne’s tourism should see a significant benefit from the influx of travellers from Istanbul, this one is particularly game-changing for Aussies travellers. Right now, Economy fares from Melbourne start from just $1,499 return while Business seats will set you back $7,599 return.
Not only will this make Istanbul more accessible, but other countries around Europe and Asia as well.
“Turkish Airlines has an extensive network and flies to more countries than any other airline so this new competitor in the Australian market is fantastic news for consumers,” said Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus.
“Increased competition helps put downward pressure on prices, which will ensure Victorian residents and businesses can stay connected with family, friends and clients around the world.”
