This March, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) is set to house Epic Intimacy: The Cinema of Zhang Yimou & Gong Li as part of its China Up Close program. From the 6 – 15 March, enthusiasts are invited to congregate together and celebrate the legacy of the award winning Chinese director and his exquisite muse.

Epic Intimacy: The Cinema of Zhang Yimou & Gong Li is a curation of Yimou and Li’s filmmaking partnership that has transpired from 1987 to today. Yimou’s entire filmography will be screened and – to the pleasure of many traditional film enthusiasts –  the season (minus his most recent, the opening film Coming Home) will be presented on 35mm film with a number of local and imported prints to enrich the viewing experience.

Amongst the gems showing are The Curse of the Golden Flower (2006) which won Best Actress at the 2007 Hong Kong Film Awards, Shanghai Triad (1995) which won the Technical Grand Prize at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, and Yimou’s debut film, Red Sorghum (1987).
