Adelaide Film Festival announce four movies ahead of full program

Four movies and other events have been teased out ahead of the full Adelaide Film Festival announcement coming on September 17th.

Cannes Film Festival 2024 Palme d’Or Award winner, Anora, reimagines Pretty Woman as a tragicomedy and cements director Sean Baker as someone to watch. It screens at the AFF on Thursday October 24th.

Screening at the Opening Weekend Gala on Friday October 25 is the Cannes prize-winning Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard. This gritty, exhilarating musical-drama features Cannes award winning actresses Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon. The movie will be followed by a latin styled street party at LA BOMBA with Mexican dancers, roving entertainers, Latin DJs, food and drinks. It will be a truly spectacular start to the festival.

AFF will also host the World Premiere of With or Without You. Funded with the support of the Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund, With or Without You it tells a moving story about a road trip with young woman, her alcoholic mother and a West African man.  Their emotional transformation is based on a true story by writer/director Kelly Schilling. With or Without You stars Marta Dusseldorp, Melina Vidler and Albert Mwangi, who will walk the red carpet alongside Schilling.

We’ve previously reported the opening night special gala presentation of The Correspondent, the story of journalist Peter Greste’s arrest in Egypt.  However, the following evening (October 24th) at Adelaide’s Capri Cinema, will be In Conversation with the film’s director Kriv Stenders (Red Dog, Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan), actors Richard Roxburgh and Julian Maroun and the film’s producer and former journalist Carmel Travers.

Returning in 2024 is the AFF Youth Screening Day (Wednesday October 30). Featuring climate activism documentary Future Council, coming-of-age feature film Young Hearts and selected shorts from the AFF Youth Filmmaking Competition, AFF Youth School Screening Day at Palace Nova Cinemas is a chance for students to build their film language and cultural understanding by engaging with hand-picked premier films for young people alongside work by their peers.

Another special event is a special Australian Premiere screening on October 11th during Adelaide Fashion Week, of Dust to Dust, a documentary about Yuima Nakazato. This Japanese designer is known for his ethereal designs and dressing music stars such as Lady Gaga. Nakazato combines fashion with sustainability and Dust to Dust follows the creation of his new collection, starting in the landfills of Kenya, with a radical reimagining of fashion. The screening is at Palace Nova Eastend with a red carpet at 6pm and film to commence at 6.30pm. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion with local designers working in sustainable fashion.
