Looks like Suicide Squad has finally been knocked off its number one perch by Bad Moms, after dominating the box office across the first three weeks of its release. Having coasted at number two for a fortnight, Moms did an impressive $1.99 million this week to move into the top spot, possibly due to the weekend being the third quietest weekend of the year at the movies.
Suicide Squad doesn’t seem to want to die yet, though, hot on Moms tail at $1.96 million. It’s now the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year to date, amassing $30.4 million since its release.
At third place is Sausage Party, with $1.24 million, proving the animated film be a surprise hit of the year – and helping provide the Australian Box Office the rare distinction of having two American comedies in its top three films.
Blake Lively’s The Shallows has dropped to 5th place on the ladder, delivering $898k this week, falling below the $1 million mark since its release 2 weeks ago.
As predicted, last week’s new entries, Ben-Hur and David Brent: Life on the Road did not do so well, but both still managed to make its way into the top 10 list. Ben-Hur, the remake of the classic Charlton Heston film, took the no. 4 spot with $963k, but has been critically panned the world over (our own reviewer being one of them, disliking the ending so much it ben-hurt him!). We’re going to assume it falls quickly down the ladder during the week. We’re also going to assume its spot in the top 5 is due to people’s curiosity (Morgan Freeman in dreadlocks? Okaaay …).
David Brent: Life on the Road also managed to creep in at number 10, making $379k in its first week.
