Australian Box Office Report: Beauty and the Beast keeps its rose alive at the top of the ladder

Disney’s new live action version of Beauty And The Beast is at the top of the box office ladder again this week. Although it only made $7.74m this time around (last week it made $13m), its total earnings since its premiere is $26.15m, and, at the rate it’s travelling, is now likely to be one of the top 10 films of 2017.

This weekend saw the release of The Lego Batman Movie, and, unsurprisingly, it did quite well. It sits at no. 2 on the box office ladder and earned $2.28m. The previous Lego Movie (released in 2014), made $29.83m in Australian cinemas by the end of its run, but time will tell if the 2017 iteration will do the same.

With the top 2 films planted firmly in the family entertainment genre, it’s hard to imagine these 2 will leave even the top 5 in the coming weeks, with Easter and school holiday breaks just around the corner.

There were mixed reviews for the highly anticipated Ghost in the Shell, however this has not stopped it from earning a no. 3 spot on the box office ladder, taking in $2.12m this week. Last week’s no. 3, Life (in its premiere week), was released on 100 screens less than Ghost in the Shell. The school holiday period and its promotional push should bring more audiences to this film in the coming weeks, and this one too may hang around in the top 5 for a while.

Movements amongst the top 3 titles meant that last week’s nos. 2 and 3 were pushed down, though both hanging in the top 5 at least. The Boss Baby, which premiered well last week and debuted at no. 2, now sits at no. 4, earning $1.97m this week. As mentioned previously, last week’s no. 3 film was Life, but, due to its earnings of $797k, has dropped to no. 4 (Ghost in the Shell took its place).

Chips and Dance Academy debuts at the box office this weekend, and should make some showing on the box office report. It’s hard to imagine them toppling Beauty and the Beast off its no. 1 spot, but both should attract teens and pre-teens looking for a flick to catch in the run up to the school holiday period.
