Australian Box Office Report: Bond shakes the box office, stirs up AU$11.3 million

In news that surprises absolutely nobody, Spectre, the 24th James Bond film has effortlessly shot to top spot both here and in The States.

Helmed by Sam Mendes and once again starring Daniel Craig as the suave agent 007, Spectre made AU$11.3 million down under and with that I’d like to throw some facts at you.

  • Spectre had the fourth biggest opening in Australia this year, trailing Jurassic World, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Furious 7.
  • Spectre has already made over half a billion dollars worldwide since opening last week in The US.
  • Spectre had the second biggest opening for a Bond film ever having made US$73 million, sitting just behind Skyfall which made US$88 million.

The Dressmaker however proved its worth, still collecting AU$2 million despite its blockbuster competition, keeping The Martian at third spot with AU$615k.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is the surprise hit of the week, debuting at 4th spot having made AU$606k. The Bollywood drama earned  250 crore (US$38 million) in its opening weekend, making it the most successful film in India this year and the fourth most successful Bollywood film ever in the US.

Whether or not it has the moxie to dethrone Spectre remains to be seen but nonetheless this week marks the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. If the figures of the franchises previous installments are anything to go by, we could have quite the battle on our hands.
