Australian Box Office Report: Deadpool slaughters records at home and around the world

Well how about that Fox? I’m guessing the big wigs wished they did this years ago but better late than never. Marvel’s most unadulterated superhero, Deadpool, has made a mockery out of box office records everywhere. As I like to do with big openings, I’m going to hit you all with some numbers.

  • First off we’re looking at at a whopping AU$14.9 million opening weekend. That’s 20th Century Fox Australia’s biggest opening ever.
  • It is also the 8th biggest Australian opening in history
  • It now ranks #1 as the biggest opening for an R rated film
  • It shot to number 1 in 61 countries including the biggest all-time opening in Russia

The point is, The Merc with a Mouth has completely changed the landscape for R-rated films and comic book adaptations in general.

However, other films opened and dropped in ranking and whatnot, including Zoolander 2. The comedy had a fairly good opening despite Deadpool’s impressive reign, earning AU$2.7 million. Not so great in The States however opening with a ho-um US$13.9 million.

Brooklyn finally reached our shores, earning a cool million, knocking Dirty Grandpa down to fourth spot after a couple of weeks on top.

And The Revenant and Star Wars are still hanging about at five and seven, respectively, hovering just under half a million.

# Film Title Distributor Box Office

The first movie to take number 1 spot from Star Wars in America, Ride Along 2 opens here as does all female comedy How to be Single.
Will Smith’s drama Concussion also opens.

All figures from The Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia and Box Office Mojo.
