Australian Box Office Report: Everest skips the climb and debuts at number 1

While nowhere near the numbers that Furious 7 and Jurassic World drew in, Universal’s impeccable year continues with Everest debuting at number one in Australia. earning itself $3.2 million over the weekend, Also in its first week in The U.S, it made a solid $7.2 million.

The adventure film based on the titular treacherous mountain has limited Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials to a sole week at number 1. Unphased, Scorch Trials still managed to muster up $2.4 million. Only opening domestically last week, the sequel debuted at number 1 with a very nice $30 million opening weekend. It is now well on track to surpassing the original.

With the family films in full swing, a few titles are cropping up to take on the blockbusters. Pixels of course rounds out the top 3 with another $1.6 million, although one can sense its imminent decline.
Australian flicks Oddball and Blinky Bill: The Movie made $984k and $253k respectively. With Last Cab To Darwin making a grand exit from the top 10, it’s nice to see some home grown films filling the void.

The other debut was Sicario which made an almost identical amount domestically and in Australia. The thriller had a limited release but still managed to set a record for “per theater average in 2015” in The States.
