Australian Box Office Report: Geostorm narrowly avoids disaster in slow box office week

Good news for Geostorm, starring our Abbie Cornish and someone else’s Gerard Butler.  In its premiere weekend, it narrowly avoided disaster, coming out on top with just $1.53m in earnings.  

This pushed Blade Runner 2049 to the no. 2 spot for the first time since it debuted in cinemas three weeks ago.  It made $1.42m at the box office, although there were 121 less screens showing this film nationally.

Not everyone’s happy with this passing of the top spot torch this week.  Critics did not love Geostorm, and, whilst it did make it to no. 1, it managed the lowest screen average this year for a film at the top of the box office chart, $4,751.  In comparison, Blade Runner 2049 has been critically acclaimed and has made a little over $8m at the box office to date. Still not the sort of numbers that distributors may have been hoping for, but strong nonetheless for a three hour sci-fi epic.

The Idris Elbas and Kate Winslet romantic survival adventure film, The Mountain Between Us, sits at no. 3 this week, earning $941k.  It premiered last week at no. 2, and this week remains on 292 screens nationwide.

The thriller starring Michael Fassbender, The Snowman, premiered this week at no. 4, a spot held last week by Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Our reviewer gave it a hopeful review (in that he hoped it would get better with age), so it seems that lacklustre reviews didn’t stop this from earning $848k at the box office this week.

Rounding out the top 5 films this weekend is Happy Death Day, which slipped down the ladder to 5th place this week from 3rd place last week.  It earned $797k, and has made $2.59m since its box office debut.

After a slow week, cinemas are expected to bounce back with the critically acclaimed, and eagerly anticipated MCU entry Thor: Ragnarok hitting screens on Thursday.
