Australian Box Office Report: Hitman’s Bodyguard aims dead-on for no. 1 spot at the box office

Whilst not exactly top-notch cinematic fare, the Ryan Reynolds/Samuel L. Jackson action film The Hitman’s Bodyguard shot to no. 1 in its premiere week at the box office, earning $2.33m in the process.

It beat out last week’s no. 1, American Made, which now sits at no. 2 on the box office ladder.  In its second week in cinemas, it made $1.52m and was dropped from 40 screens nationally. It’s at about $5m total.

These movements come after a pretty dismal weekend at the box office last week, where less than $8m was made in cinemas, the lowest grossing weekend in three years.

This week’s box office recovery was due in part not just to The Hitman’s Bodyguard, but also to comedy Girl’s Trip, which sits at no. 3 on the box office ladder.   In its premiere week at the box office, it made $1.30m and managed a screen average of $4,621.  Girl’s Trip stars Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith, who has been promoting the film in Australia lately.

War epic Dunkirk dropped from no. 3 to no. 4 this week, earning $563k at the box office.  After 7 weeks in cinemas, it is still available on 223 screens nationally. It will continue at Melbourne’s IMAX until October, where it’s ideal to experience the only 1570 print in the country.

After 4 weeks at the box office, Annabelle: Creation has dropped dramatically from no. 2 to no. 5 this week, earning $536k, a 41% drop since last week.  It sits precariously in the top 5, however it has made nearly $7m to date.

Thankfully (or not, depending on how ballsy you are), another horror film is about to hit the screens.  The remake of Stephen King’s It opens this week, and was given a pretty good wrap by our reviewer.
