Hollywood blockbuster Kong: Skull Island, has just beaten Aussie Hugh to the top spot, in its first weekend at the box office. Kong: Skull Island took in $4.71m, and stars Tom Hiddleston and last year’s Best Actress Oscar winner, Brie Larson.
Logan still did considerably well, sitting at no. 2 on the box office ladder and earning $4.52m, so not really that far behind Kong: Skull Island.

There were movements between 3rd, 4th and 5th place at the box office. Hidden Figures, last week sitting at no. 2, now sits at no. 3, earning $1.31m. This is still ticking along well, showing on an extra 15 more screens nationwide so that you can now catch it at 340 outlets around the country. Jasper Jones moved from 4th last week to 5th this week, earning $395k, down 37% from its opening weekend.
It’s interesting to note that other Aussie films continue to rep in 3 films across the top 5 this week, with Lion still hanging in there at no. 4 on the box office ladder, Down from no. 3 last week, and earning $671k. The film’s success has secured it its place as no. 5 most successful Australian movie, more than likely earning $28m to date by the end of the week. If it earns over $31.8m, it’ll overtake Happy Feet, which is the 4th most successful Australian film at the box office.
This weekend sees the release of Loving, starring Joel Edgerton (Aussies all over the box office!) and Ruth Negga as Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple in 1950s Virginia who fought a legal battle in the US Supreme Court to decriminalise their union.
