Seems schoolkids – as well as parents and guardians – are really into the weird and wonderful, with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children topping the box office at $4 million this week. It beat out The Secret Life of Pets , which took an impressive $3.3 million in its foutta week of release after being at number 1 last week, following a comeback.

Another fan fave for the school holidays, Storks, took in $1.8 million but remains steady at number 4, where it was last week. Pete’s Dragon, on the other hand, is inching further down the ladder, last week at no. 5 but this week at no. 7, taking in $1.1 million.
New to the top 10 and making a pretty good start was The Magnificent Seven, taking in $3.25 million. Starring Chris Pratt and Denzel Washington, this may not be to schoolkid’s liking but those past HSC era will enjoy not just this as a Pratt vehicle but as an interesting film to note, as far as remakes go.
Unfortunately, Snowden, which has only been in cinemas for a fortnight, took a bit of a dive, going from no. 7 last week to no. 9 this week, taking in $315k at the box office.
Next week’s Box Office Report should see strong performances from the much anticipated Emily Blunt thriller, The Girl on the Train and Kurt Russell/Mark Wahlberg action flick, Deepwater Horizon.
