Australian Box Office Report: No Swan Song for Sing as it tops the ladder yet again

Animated musical flick Sing did well this week, earning $2.32m at the Australia box office.  In its third week in the cinema and second week at top spot, it’s already earned $22.3 million, although it has dropped in earnings from last week by 33%.

Hot on its tail is the live action musical (no animals this time) La La Land, which took in $2.3m at the box office.  Sitting at no. 2 on the ladder, it actually gained a better screen average ($10,985 in 210 theatres this week) than Sing, which screened at 344 theatre nationally but made only $6,758 screen average.  The growing success of La La Land (it didn’t even make the top 5 on the box office list when it first opened in theatres) is likely due to the Golden Globes buzz it received recently (winning a record 7 awards), and has recently been nominated for 11 BAFTA awards.

The other animated film in theatres is Moana, Disney’s newest in its family.  Still a contender, it placed 3rd on the box office ladder (up from 4th place last week), and earned $2.12m this week, which should make Dwayne Johnson and all his muscles very happy.

Movements in the top 3 spots on the box office means that the Chris Pratt & Jennifer Lawrence film, Passengersmade a significant drop down the ladder, sliding from 2nd place last week to 4th place this week, and earning $2.00m (down 37% from last week).

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, though not in the top spot anymore, still remains steady in the top 5.  It dropped from 3rd place last week to 5th place this week, earning $1.88m at the box office. However, it’s made, to date, $47.13m at the box office, which is no small feat!

Hanging in the top ten is Australian director Justin Kurzel’s tiny indie flick Assassin’s Creed starring some relatively unknown named Michael Fassbender.  This dropped down the ladder, from 5th spot last week to 7th this week, earning $1.3m.

Next week we should see some movement with the release of Lion, starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman. This also generated Golden Globes buzz so it should do well relatively well in its opening week, especially being partially set and filmed in Tasmania and Victoria.
