When 2016 ended, the world, and everyone in galaxies far far away, knew for bloody sure that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was going to blitz the box office. However, with the release of Christmas and holiday entertainment, this has now slipped down the ladder, making way, this week, for the Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon animated film, Sing, which made $3.37m at the box office this week.
Passengers, starring predominantly Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt (with a little bit of Michael Sheen thrown in for good measure) took 2nd place, earning $3.19m at the box office.

This means then, that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has dropped to 3rd spot. This week, it made $3.09m at the box office. But don’t feel too badly for it. By the end of 2016, it had made over $9 million, and in total it has already made over $40 million.
Next week should see another shift in the box office ladder, with the releases of Collateral Beauty (starring Will Smith, Edward Norton and Kate Winslet) and Natalie Portman’s Jackie O biopic, Jackie. Though both would be expected to open further down the ladder.
