Australian Box Office: The Martian battles ghosts and Spielberg and holds its own

As expected, last weeks two new releases Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Bridge of Spies did in fact make an impact at the box office, but not enough to conquer The Martian, which enjoys its fourth week at the top.

The Martian made another very impressive AU$2.2 million as it continues to stave off its competition. It’s still on top in The States too as it now sits on a worldwide gross of US$385 million.

Not to be completely overshadowed, the newest Spielberg/Hanks collaboration Bridge Of Spies debuted at second spot earning AU$1.7 million while the fifth film in the Paranormal Activity franchise  entered at third spot making AU$1.3 million.
It’s probably a good thing that The Ghost Dimension is being touted as the last film in the series because the latest iteration had the worst opening out of the all six in the US, earning a comparatively  diminutive US$8 million.

Burnt, the new Bradley Cooper film has also proved to be quite the sleeper hit, debuting at fourth spot and earning AU$875k. It knocked fellow comedy The Intern down to fifth, but it is still earning above half a million in Australia.
