Australian director Shannon Murphy amongst BAFTA’s Best Director nominees for Babyteeth

Taking last year’s criticism on board for its predominant exclusion of people of colour and women in the majority of its categories, the British Academy of Film and  Television Arts (BAFTA) has overhauled its 2021 voting process with a far more inclusive mindset.

Continuing to throw the eventual Oscar nominations into chaos, this year’s BAFTA nominees honoured only a sliver of the expected talent (Frances McDormand, Vanessa Kirby, Chadwick Boseman, Daniel Kaluuya), instead broadening its scope for a more comprehensive line-up that extended to such deserving performances as Mads Mikkelsen for Another Round, Dominique Fishback for Judas and the Black Messiah, and young Alan Kim for Minari.

In a win for both Australia and female representation, homegrown director Shannon Murphy earned a Best Director nod for the film Babyteeth, following a sweep of the AACTA Awards last year where she similarly took home the Direction nod, alongside honours for the film, screenplay, and its cast; Murphy is one of four females up for the Best Director this year, alongside Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Sarah Gavron (Rocks), and Jasmila Žbanić (Quo Vadis, Aida?).

Apple also made their debut year, earning two nominations for the Tom Hanks-led drama Greyhound (Best Sound and Visual Effects) and an Animated Film nod for the acclaimed Wolfwalkers. These nominations follow recent Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award wins for Apple Original series Ted Lasso, as well as PGA Award nominations for Wolfwalkers and Ted Lasso; and DGA Award nominations for Apple Original Documentary Boys State and Ted Lasso.

With each subsequent award ceremony refusing expected precursors across several of the major categories (Best Actress, for example, has no clear front runner) it will at least make the Academy Award nominations that much more exciting, and, really, should we expect anything other than unpredictability in our current climate?
