Australian distributor Sharmill Films acquires Lady Macbeth in Toronto

Australian distributor Sharmill Films have acquired standout Toronto Film Festival offering Lady Macbeth.

The film is a Gothic tale of a young woman trapped in a marriage of convenience in 19th century England. Much like the original Lady Macbeth, her actions leave in their wake a maelstrom of murder, mayhem and mystery on a country estate.

Lady Macbeth also announces the arrival of a major screen talent in 19-year-old lead actress Florence Pugh in the lead role of Katherine. Critics have been heaping praise on Pugh since the film’s debut in Toronto.

The film is being lauded for attaching itself to the canon of contemporary cinema that puts the female perspective at the centre of the narrative. All the more interesting in that regard is that the film is directed by William Oldroyd, a young British man.

Either way, it’s clear that both the director and the lead have bright futures in the industry.

Sharmill Films will present Lady Macbeth to Australian audiences in 2017.
