The Blues Brothers will return to primetime tv, with co-creators Dan Aykroyd and Judy Belushi set to pitch to networks this month, Rolling Stone reports.
After 38 years since the pair’s official debut on Saturday Night Live in 1978, Aykroyd and Belushi will return to the screen, teaming up with Saturday Night Live original writer Anne Beattes and animators from Bento Box Entertainment (Bob’s Burgers) to produce a new version of The Blues Brothers.
The series will be a reboot set in Chicago but with a contemporary twist. It will follow Jake and Elwood Blues and their band, “utilizing all new technology to make and promote their own records, seek out and record new artists and avoid law enforcement — and all while fighting for truth, justice and a better breakfast sandwich,” Aykroyd says.
The show will include a diverse range of music, featuring a mix of soul, blues and R&B classics, as well as new performances recorded exclusively for the show.
Following The Blues Brothers initial success on Saturday Night Live, they became an international hit, selling over 3.5 million copies of their debut album “Briefcase Full of Blues”. They later became subject of the 1980 comedy classic The Blues Brothers directed by John Landis.
Aykroyd and Belushi also entered a joint venture with Don Was’ Blue Note label to form the ‘Blues Brothers Records’ last year, aiming to inspire and assist budding blues artists.
No network or distributors are confirmed yet but stay tuned.
