The Boston boys are at it again as Ben Affleck gears up for his second collaboration with the author of Gone Baby Gone, Dennis Lehane, on a film that looks a little bit beer baron meets Mystic River.
Oscar winner Ben Affleck has written the screenplay and will star in the crime thriller based on Lehane’s novel of the same title, Live by Night. The film will take place in the ‘roaring 20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies.’
‘The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.’
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson have already been attached as producers of the project alongside Ben Affleck and Jennifer Todd. Chris Brigham, Dennis Lehane and Chay Carter will join on as executive producers.
Elle Fanning will join the cast fresh from success in The Neon Demon along with Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana and Oscar winner Chris Cooper.
Live by Night will reach Australian cinemas on January 12, 2017
