This year has seen many female-driven films find huge success at the box office. Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz and Shailene Woodley have led Maleficent, The Other Woman and The Fault in Our Stars to becoming huge hits this year in Australia and around the world. We can now add Scarlett Johansson and Lucy to that list, as the high-concept action film took the top spot at the Aussie box office over the weekend. The film opened with $4.66 million, taking the top spot from last week’s champ Hercules, which took another $1.47 million. Lucy is already on its way to the US$100 million mark in the US and is a much-needed solo hit for Johansson. You can read our review here. Mrs. Brown’s Boys D’Movie continued to find an audience over the weekend by taking another $0.96 million, followed by critical hit Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and comedic bomb Sex Tape. Espionage thriller A Most Wanted Man debuted at number 7 with $0.3 million, while Aussie apocalypse drama These Final Hours just cracked the chart with $0.2 million.

This week is a big one. Australia will see the release of the new Marvel blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy. The film is already doing big business in the US, where it opened with a weekend total of US$94.32 million; a new August record and one of the biggest openings of the year. Pretty good for an obscure comic book movie with no proven stars (in live action roles, of course). Reviews have been stellar, with many citing the film as the most imaginative and fun film so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Expect Guardians to do big business over the coming weekend. You can read our Guardians review here. Also opening this week is mature-age rom-com And So It Goes, which stars Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton as two people who find love later in life. So if you’re not interested in seeing Guardians of the Galaxy this weekend, then And So It Goes might just be right up your alley! You can read our review of the film here.
