It took another new addition to an iconic 20+ year old franchise to dethrone Jurassic World, but it wasn’t the opening we were expecting. Terminator: Genisys hit theaters over the weekend and while it enjoys its number 1 spot, it has some impressive competition nipping at its heels.
Opening with a less that stellar $4.7 million, Arnie’s return to the time travelling sci-fi saga has failed to strike a chord internationally, earning an underwhelming $42 million. Compare this with the years biggest flick in Jurassic World which earned $16 million in its opening weekend and $208 million in the US and it would seem that the Terminator franchise’s star is beginning to dim. Less than positive reviews would have been unlikely to help.
As school holidays roll on, Minions and Inside Out have secured second and third spot respectively, managing to push Jurassic World to number 4. As seen below, the top 4 are all incredibly close in terms of figures and Ted 2 is sticking around at 5th spot pulling in $2.3 million.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that this year has seen three films surpass $40 million in the Australian box office. Improving upon last year -which had none- Age of Ultron, Furious 7 and Jurassic World (which is expected to hit $50 million) have pulled in wonderful figures and with some big films still set to drop, that number is likely to change.

Whether or not it knocks off Terminator, Magic Mike XXL is bound to make an impact when it opens next week. The first film managed to make $167 million worldwide despite its silly premise so time will tell if the sequels new found popularity can garner it some success.
