As we come to the end of “Phase Three” and the leadup to next year’s still untitled Avengers finale, Marvel continue to expand their cinematic universe. Today this comes in the form of the release of the franchise’s newest addition, Captain Marvel.
Captain Marvel is an all new adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from a previously unseen period in its history. Set in the 1990s, this latest instalment follows Carol Danvers on her journey to become one of universe’s most powerful heroes. Danvers and a small team of allies find themselves in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races which has made its way to earth.
Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn and Jude Law to name a few. Produced by Kevin Feige (The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy) and directed by duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Mississippi Grind), the film is the 21st instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A film focussed on the character of Carol Danvers has been in development for several years now. Brie Larson’s (Room, Kong: Skull Island) casting was announced in 2016 at Comic Con in San Diego, and sees Captain Marvel as the first female led superhero film from Marvel Studios.
If this trailer is anything to go by, Captain Marvel is bound to be an intense, high energy exploration of potentially Marvel’s most game-changing character so far. And for those who saw the final secret ending of Infinity War, it’s clear she’s the hero the Avengers need.
Promised to go higher, further, faster; Captain Marvel is in cinemas 7th March 2019.
