1996 classic Trainspotting, a landmark achievement in raw British cinema, has remained the crowning achievement of Director Danny Boyle. Adapted from Irvine Welsh’s novel of the same name almost two decades ago, the black comedy is a reference point for the careers of all involved, particularly Ewan McGregor who played Renton, one of the four lead characters in the intense, drug-fueled film. Now it seems that McGregor, along with the other three lead actors – Robert Carlyle, Ewan Bremner, and Jonny Lee Miller – is on board for a sequel, according to Boyle himself.
While doing promotion for Steve Jobs, Boyle broke the news to Deadline, claiming that a sequel will be his next project and that ” it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together”. Their, of course, is referring to the original lead cast.
With Miller currently playing Sherlock Holmes on Elementary and Carlyle a regular on Once Upon a Time, the sequel will depend on aligning various TV schedules, but as long as all are on board it seems like we’ll be watching the adventures of Sick Boy, Renton, Begbie, and Spud sometime within the next two years.
The screenplay by John Hodge, who adapted the original film, will be based on Porno, Welsh’s sequel to his original novel which picks up 10 years after with Sick Boy attempting to clean up his life and renovate a newly inherited pub, with money earned from leasing it as the set of an adult film. Renton, who owns a successful club in Amsterdam, helps finance Sick Boy’s venture, while Spud deals with depression and Begbie is released from prison.
