Pixar first announced they were working on a film centering on Dia De Los Muertos – the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead – all the way back in 2012. But until today, we didn’t have a name for the film.
At the annual D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Pixar revealed the film would be called Coco, with a release date of Fall 2017 (presumably they would be shooting for something around the Halloween mark). Toy Story 3‘s director Lee Unkrich is helming the production, while Darla Anderson – who also worked on Toy Story 3 – is returning to produce.
The revealed synopsis is as follows:
“Coco is the celebration of a lifetime, where the discovery of a generations-old mystery leads to a most extraordinary and surprising family reunion.”
And as this doesn’t tell us much, the only other specific detail we know is that the lead character will be a 12-year-old boy by the name of Miguel. Unkrich was quoted at the event as saying that the film is a “big family reunion between the living and the dead”, if that clarifies the concept any further. Pixar are good at keeping their stories close to their chests until much closer to the release.
Following the release of The Good Dinosaur this November, Coco will be the only yet-to-be-released original entry into the Pixar film catalogue. With Finding Dory, The Incredibles 2, Cars 3 and of course Toy Story 4, the next few years from camp Pixar will primarily be returning to some of their existing, most loved brands. So we at The Iris are excited about the promise of some more original stories amongst their release schedule.
