DVD Review: Eastsiders (USA, 2014)

EastSiders

Based off the acclaimed webisode series written and directed by Kit Williamson, Eastsiders, follows the ups and downs of gay couple Cal and Thom’s relationship, which has been rocked by Thom’s recent infidelity. The dark comedy set and filmed in Silverlake California chooses to shy away from the couple’s orientation as a major plot driver, by approaching their woes from a relatable standpoint.

Cal’s (Williamson) four year relationship with Thom (Van Hansis) is on thin ice after learning of his affair with struggling writer Jeremy (Matthew McKelligon). Cal’s hilariously irrational way of dealing with the news includes indulging in discretions of his own and seeking boozy solace with his firecracker of a BFF Kathy (Constance Wu). Kathy has her own problems, or so she believes, with her very sweet and emotionally stable boyfriend Ian (John Halbach). Cal and Thom find themselves in relationship limbo as they try to figure out if they should stay together or call it quits.

There are some boisterously funny moments in this film, the bizarre love triangle (spoiler alert) between Cal, Thom and Jeremy is extremely awkward and kind of left field. Most of the humour however, is delivered from the bright spark that is Kathy, her character’s abrasive sarcasm and melodrama is hard to ignore and she has her own intense little plot which allows her to express some depth and vulnerability.

This however could not be said for Cal and Thom, whose interaction lacks chemistry and momentum. The plot itself which hones in on them for the majority of the time, takes a hit due to this, leaving it lagging and lacklustre. Van Hansis does try his best to inject some charm and sincerity into his character which pays off despite his meandering ways. On the whole though there isn’t enough drama and oomph to the film to keep audience interest, which is a shame as the foundation to a good story is there.
