A lot has been written over the last few days about the number of “cameos” that we can find in the new Star Wars film, The Force Awakens – in particular a certain James Bond. It turns out that there’s a lot more than just familiar faces who make their way into the film… but voices too.
In an article with Entertainment Weekly, JJ Abrams confirmed that Obi-Wan Kenobi – both young and old – as well as Yoda himself made it into the film. Their voices can be found in the dream sequence that Rey has when she touches Luke’s lightsaber. Here’s what JJ said in the interview:
“You do hear a little bit of Yoda. You hear Luke yelling out, ‘Nooo!’ from that moment in Empire. And you hear Obi-Wan at the end say, ‘Rey … these are your first steps,’” Abrams says. “Here’s the cool part. We asked Ewan McGregor to come in and do the line. And he was awesome and we were very grateful. He was incredibly sweet and handsome, and all that stuff. Then he rode off on his motorcycle. Literally the coolest voice over actor ever.”
He goes onto reveal that the “Rey” from Obi-Wan was actually the voice of Alec Guinness, as they pulled it from him saying “Afraid” in the original film. Now that’s pretty cool. Chances are you missed it on first viewing… so be sure to keep your ears out on your second, third and fourth viewings…
