On a tour through Queensland promoting his Stan Original series Wolf Creek and new film Observance, Australia’s own John Jarratt seems to be enjoying himself.
He’s been on a roll for stellar performances throughout the past year and he had quite a bit to say about young Australian talent and the perpetuity of Mick Taylor when The Iris caught up with him on the red carpet of the Gold Coast Film Festival.
Hi John, how does it feel to be back in Queensland?
Yeah, I’m a Maroons supporter, I’ve been on the Goldy, been on the Sunny Coast, I went to high school in Townsville, there’s a lot of Queensland about me. I like being here.
So how did you get involved with Obeservance?
I did a film with Joseph Sims-Dennett, called Bad Behavior and I was insanely impressed with the guy. He’s a great filmmaker and a big part of the future and what’s going to happen [in Australian cinema]. Observance is a very brave film that he’s put together, and it’s being well received all around the world. It’s different, it’s unique, it’s unusual and deserves support.
Are you planning on working with Joseph Sims-Dennett anytime in the future?
He has a project that we’re working on, several actually. He asked me to be a part of what he does and I don’t mind being a part of what he does.
So you are currently working on a Wolf Creek TV series, you recently said in another interview that you were initially worried that Mick Taylor may be exploited, could you expand on this?
Well when they rang me and said we’re going to do a Wolf Creek TV show, I thought that’s getting a little gratuitous really, and I didn’t really know how it was going to work so I agreed to take a look at the script. The script was absolutely fantastic and it does work and it’s going to be released by Stan in May.
Stan and Netflix are the future, that’s where the world is going. Stan is refreshing because they’re go-getters they do their job so brilliantly, and they’re all about making it Australian and they’re very successful at it.
So a parting note, when can we expect more details on Wolf Creek 3?
“Well we don’t know at this point. The TV show’s been so successful there’s a very strong possibility of there being another TV show, so we’ll get that out of the road and if we still believe there’s an opportunity after that we’ll see about another Wolf Creek somewhere down the track.”

The Wolf Creek TV series will be released sometime in May via streaming service Stan and Observance is currently touring Australia in limited release.
