Joe Hill’s comic book series Locke & Key has been given another shot at a TV series, after previously coming so close that a FOX-pilot actually screened during the San Diego Comic-Con 2011.
The issues with the first project were in part unclear, but the consequent scrapping of the series may have been for the best, given IDW Entertainment, the publisher for the books, has started to develop the property as a television series with Hill himself attached to write the pilot and produce.
The project also has helping hands from Circle of Confusion (responsible for The Walking Dead) and will this time have nothing to do with DreamWorks TV or outsourced screenplay.
The original story follow Nina Locke and her three children, Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode, who following an awful tragedy, attempt to rebuild their lives at Keyhouse, in their family home at Lovecraft, Massachusetts. Their mysterious Victorian home appears to have transformative keys hidden inside its walls, the type that is also being sought by a malevolent creature with ties to the Locke family’s past.
The writer behind the books, Joe Hill, has explained his enthusiasm for the series, saying “the seven years I spent working on Locke & Key was the happiest creative experience of my life and there still isn’t a day when I don’t think about those characters and miss visiting with them. The six books of the series are very like six seasons of a cable TV series and so it feels only natural to bring that world to the little screen and to see if we can’t scare the pants off viewers everywhere.”
The story project is still being developed, and no dates for shooting or screening have yet been released.
