Netflix studies reveal when we get “hooked” to popular TV series

Netflix has analysed its global streaming data across the debut seasons of some of their most popular programs, and have found some trends that help to answer one interesting statistical query: when do viewers go from casual watchers to binge/addicted/hooked fans of a new TV series. In effect, the studies pinpointed where at least 70% of viewers would watch an episode and then go on to complete the entire season.

Though every series yielded different results both globally and within Australia, the differences had no correlation to audience size or attrition, regardless of programme, episode number or country. Here are some more of the findings:

  • No one is ever hooked by a pilot.
  • The “hooked” moment is well before any major “twists” or revelations are made.
  • The Dutch tend to fall in love with series the fastest, getting hooked one episode ahead of most countries regardless of the programme.
  • Germans showed early fandom for Arrow.
  • France fell first for How I Met Your Mother.
  • In Better Call Saul, Jimmy McGill won Brazilians over one episode quicker than Mexicans.
  • In Australia and New Zealand, viewers prove to hold out longer across the board, with members getting hooked one to two episodes later than the rest of the world on almost every programme.

According to the research, here are the average Australian and global episodes where members got hooked:
