How far would you go to be great? The new film Whiplash, out in limited release tomorrow, shows us just how much one young drummer Andrew (Teller) is prepared to give… and take… in order to be great. A first year jazz student, he is handpicked by Fletcher (Simmons), a teacher who is known equally for his brilliance and his brutal teaching methods.
In advance of its release, Sony have released a new clip and featurette for the film. Our first clip shows Fletcher prepping his band for a competition. He does not mince words or adjectives and let’s them all know that failure is not an option. It’s very colourful language so don’t say we didn’t warn you!
This movie is no Glee episode where somebody is waiting to hug out your hurt feelings. As Fletcher tells Andrew is one scene ‘there are no two words in the English language more harmful than good job’. Ouch! The featurette, also released this week, shows us a little more movie and includes a few words with the main actors and the Director, Damien Chazelle. Simmons, who plays the teacher Fletcher, admits that while his character is ‘a psychopath’ he does appreciate ‘his desire to inspire and cultivate brilliance’.
So looks like this movie is the real deal, where reputations are at stake and if you want to be successful, you better be prepared to bleed.
