New trailer for Aussie thriller The Rover

The Rover

Back in 2010, Australian director David Michôd made a big splash in Australia and overseas with his crime thriller Animal Kingdom. The film was a critical success and boosted the Hollywood careers of Aussie actors Joel Edgerton, Sullivan Stapleton and Jacki Weaver, with Weaver even scoring an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actress.

Michôd is returning this year with a thriller set in the Australian Outback, which was written by Michôd and his Animal Kingdom star Joel Edgerton. Filmed primarily in South Australia, the film stars Guy Pearce and Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson. Pearce has made a very successful career for himself overseas, so it’s great to see him head home for a major leading role. It’s also exciting to see Pattinson try something a little different, and he definitely has the potential to distance himself from Edward Cullen with films such as this.

It has recently been announced that The Rover will have its world premiere at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival in May.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

In a dangerous near-future in the Australian desert, Eric (Pearce) has left everything behind. But when his last possession is stolen by a gang of dangerous criminals, Eric sets off on a hunt to find them. Along the journey he enlists the help of Rey (Pattinson), a naïve and injured member of the gang who was left behind.
