Hollywood megastar Will Smith is more reliable than not, with a track record of big, successful films like Independence Day and Ali. Some flops have thrown him off course along the way but his latest role in the film Focus is looking to shake the skepticism he is sometimes approached with, promising a big return to form as he plays a mastermind con artist in a high stakes thriller.
His character, Nicky, becomes involved with a novice con artist, Jess (Margot Robbie) whom he mentors for some years until she turns adversarial and deadly. Jess’ femme fatale looks to be the main antagonist here, but if the trailer is anything to go by, there are plenty of dangerous situations Nicky gets himself involved in. The film seems to rely heavily on Smith’s charm and swagger, a good move seeing as that is a place most of his greatest performances comes from.
Focus was written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love) and also stars Rodrigo Santoro, Gerald McRaney, Adrian Martinez and BD Wong.
Focus is released in Australian cinemas on March 5th
