The theme was rock and roll for the Adelaide Film Festival opening night film, The Angels: Kickin’ Down the Door by Adelaide-based film director Madeleine Parry. Special guests included The Angels (John Brewster, Rick Brewster, Dave Gleeson) and producers Peter Hanlon and Martin Fabinyi.
The movie documents the extraordinary rise of The Angels and their foray into the American market. The title Kickin’ Down the Door refers to the effect that they had on opening doors for other Australian artists such as INXS and Men at Work. The documentary reveals the tensions and struggles within the band and their families, with a focus on the now-deceased frontman Bernard ‘Doc’ Neeson. Interviews with the families and surviving members of the band give a fascinating insight into the frenetic world of rock and roll.
Other luminaries in attendance included the Premier of South Australia, The Hon Peter Malinauskas MP, Minister for the Arts, The Hon Andrea Michaels MP, AFF Chair Anton Andreacchio and filmmakers including Scott Hicks.
