You soon realise this is not a camera that sits in a shadow of its smartphone body, but instead a refreshing and impressive collaboration with Leica to form the hero of the Huawei P10 Plus.
Thanks to the dual cameras on the back (20 megapixel black and white lens and a 12 megapixel color Leica lens’) and the ability to accept light with the f/1.8 aperture, the photos are rich and vibrant with minimal noise or grain, even in low light settings.
Uniquely, when a photo is taken in Pro Mode and used Selective Focus (by holding your finger on an object on the screen), there is the ability to change and shift this focus after the image is saved, leaving the user with the ability to shift attention and focus between individual items and/or the background and foreground. This same bokeh blur effect in the selfie mode will often make you look too smooth and fake and make the photo feel less crisp that you would of hoped. Pro Mode allows the user to change ISO (from 50 – 3200) and shutter speed (1/4000 – 30 seconds) to give the ultimate professional experience.
The Huawei P10 Plus’ 5.5 inch display has a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels at around 540 ppi pixel density. This detailed and sharp display will highlight the clarity of your photos when you zoom all the way in on your photos and only notice minimal blur. The cameras record video at 2160p (30fps) and 1080p (60fps) with a front camera lens of 8 megapixels.
All test photos exhibited below have not been edited, not even with the multitude of filters available within the phone. The Sydney Harbour shots were taken at 7pm in complete night time environment and used either the phones Light Trails option that tracks the lights of vehicles and traffic or Night Shot modes that create long exposure shots over your desired time period (up to 18 seconds).
With frequent bursts of using the camera (with neither of the dual SIM slots/mobile data in use), the battery depleted from 100% to have 52% still remaining after almost 48 hours and coupled with the amazing output of images for its slim size, the Huawei P10 Plus appears to be a necessary travel companion.
