It’s been five years since we last saw Robert Downey Jr in an entirely dramatic role, when he appeared in the critically panned The Soloist. While he is now best known for the role of Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is easy to forget that Downey Jr is one of the most gifted actors of his generation. Judging by the newly released first trailer for Downey Jr’s next film The Judge, it looks like we will be reminded of his dramatic skill when the film is released later this year.
Screen legend Robert Duvall will act opposite Downey Jr in the film, which also boasts an incredible ensemble cast that includes Vera Farmiga, Vincent D’Onofrio, Billy Bob Thornton, Leighton Meester and Melissa Leo. Duvall looks like a pretty safe bet for Supporting Actor awards consideration later in the year, and if Downey Jr knocks it out of the park no one would complain seeing the biggest actor in Hollywood take home a few awards too.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Big city lawyer Hank Palmer (Downey Jr) returns to his childhood home where his father (Duvall), the town’s judge, is suspected of murder. Hank sets out to discover the truth and, along the way, reconnects with his estranged family.
