After stepping down from Universal’s live-action retelling of The Little Mermaid, Sofia Copolla will instead write and direct a remake of Clint Eastwood‘s 1970’s period drama The Beguiled.
Originally starring Eastwood, directed by Don Siegel, and adapted from Thomas P. Cullinan‘s novel by the same name, The Beguiled follows a wounded American soldier rescued and nursed back to health by the occupants of an all-girls boarding school. As he returns to health the stranger charms his way throughout the school, seducing students and teachers alike and creating a perfect storm of jealousy, betrayal and sexual repression.
According to The Wrap, Elle Fanning will play a student at the school while Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst are also reportedly on board as the school’s headmistress and a school instructor, respectively.
A male lead is yet to be cast.
The film with retain its 1970’s setting with The Bling Ring‘s Youree Henley to produce and filming to begin later this year.
