Sony has announced that video game streaming service, PlayStation Now, and a DualShock 4 USB wireless adapter, will be available for PC and Mac. Australian players will be able to access the 300+ titles available on the service, which include Bioshock Infinite, The Last of Us, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution, from 16th of September for $34.95 AUD.
Until that time comes, the wireless adaptor will allow you to connect your controller to your computer hardware and a wide range of other games, as long as the game supports a PlayStation 4 controller.
Sony’s move to offer games cross-platform comes after Microsoft announced a similar platform, Xbox Play Anywhere, during their E3 press conference earlier in the year.
Similar to the ramblings of crazy conspiracy theorists, discussions about the death of gaming consoles have taken place throughout many schoolyards and forums since we were still bickering about Sonic v Mario back in ’94. Consoles cost a lot of money to produce and companies rarely sell them at a profit. The availability of PlayStation Now on other platforms may not seem like a big deal, but this could be the first step into a world without consoles.
If nothing else, this is a big win for PC gamers who have had to live in a world that puts increasingly little effort into porting console games to their platform. If it means we never have to put up with another Batman: Arkham Knight-level disaster, we’ll gladly accept this new arrangement.
