Once it was revealed that Spider-Man: No Way Home would be exploring the multiverse and introducing a slew of characters that appeared in previous Spider-Man films separate from the current slate, fans were convinced that both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would be making return appearances as the respective web-slinger from their own films; Maguire from the Sam Raimi trilogy (2002-2007), Garfield from The Amazing Spider-Man films (2012-2014).
The speculation continues though, as this latest trailer for the Jon Watts-directed actioner shows no sign of any other Spider-Man, apart from the returning Tom Holland. Benedict Cumberbatch‘s Doctor Strange appears to have a significant role alongside Holland, clueing him and returning players Zendaya and Jacob Batalon about the intricacies of the multiverse and what that means for our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.
And though Maguire and Garfield are nowhere to be seen – the speculation has already ramped up regarding certain shots alluding to them being edited out – Willem Dafoe‘s Green Goblin and Alfred Molina‘s Doctor Octopus from Maguire’s films, and Jamie Foxx‘s Electro from Garfield’s ill-received Amazing Spider-Man 2 earn their fill as the villains here.
Whatever the case, No Way Home is sure to shake up the MCU moving forward.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is set for an exclusive theatrical release from December 16th, 2021 from Sony Pictures.
