The Golden Age Cinema & Bar in Sydney will play host to a program of Studio Ghibli favourites, including several screenings of the newest Ghibli film When Marnie Was There.
The film is an adaptation of Joan G. Robinson‘s 1968 British novel of the same name. The film follows Anna Sasaki, an orphan in foster care, who is sent to a seaside town to ease her asthma and it’s there that she meets the mysterious Marnie. When Marnie Was There is most likely the final Studio Ghibli film for some time, after Ghibli’s co-creators Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata announced their retirement. When Marnie Was There is directed by Studio Ghibli animator Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who has worked for the company for nearly 20 years.
Golden Age are paying homage to several of Studio Ghibli’s famous films, with screenings of The Tale of Princess Kaguya on Friday, 12 June, and a triple feature of When Marnie Was There, My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away on Saturday, 13 of June. When Marnie Was There will also be screened on Thursday, 11 June, and Wednesday, 17 June.
Golden Age are also getting involved with the Sydney Film Festival, taking over the Festival Hub on Wednesday, 10 June with a night of live tunes from cult films. The soundtracks will be interpreted by Charlie Heart, and guests can request their favourite songs from film. More information for this event can be found at Sydney Film Festival’s website.
