The first trailer for the 2017 Power Rangers reboot has landed, showing off a seriously edgy take on the 90’s fan favourite.
Based on the original Power Rangers series, which had a much lighter tone and a lot more spandex, the Lionsgate adaptation seems to pass-up on the 90’s cheese for a more modern tone.
Opening with a moody smashed car scene, the trailer depicts a bunch of teens who are forced to attend Summer school. Ripe with school-yard bullying and parental lectures, the trailer takes you on a journey to Angel Grove with the rangers as they develop their powers, meet the modernised villain Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks), and for a split-second don their iconic suits.
The YA adventure seems to be taking notes from films like Chronical, and Spiderman, taking a step back from the goofiness fans have grown to love to create a super-power story with a more realistic feel.
Written by John Gatins (Need for Speed, Real Steel) and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) the film will debut on March 24, 2017.
