The first trailer has arrived for the eagerly anticipated Captain America: Civil War, a film which serves as the introduction to “Phase Three” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) – the end of Phase Two being found earlier this year in Ant-Man.
The trailer picks up conveniently from where a post-credit scene in Ant-Man left off, where Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier), Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Sam Wilson (Falcon) are in some kind of warehouse. Here, they’re meeting “Buck” again, presumably for the first time since the events of The Winter Soldier. And in spite of what he’d done there, Captain America seems intent of saving his life. Which is bound to cause some problems.
What happens from there leads to a separation of The Avengers into two factions, one side led by Captain America and the other led by Iron Man (Tony Stark, Robert Downey Jr.), making this more a co-headlined film between Stark and Captain, rather than just a solo Captain adventure.
In terms of a non-Avengers branded film (don’t worry, there are still at least two more of them planned for 2018 and 2019 and they’re being filmed entirely in IMAX – the first feature films in history to do so), one thing the trailer is promising is that we’re going to see more super-heroes on screen than ever before in a MCU film solo-branded edition.
Don Cheadle is there (who does not look like he’s doing well in one scene). Jeremy Renner is there. Scar Jo is there. Elizabeth Olsen is there. According to reports, we can also expect Emily VanCamp (Agent 13), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), William Hurt and more…
The end of the trailer is just Buck and Captain America beating the crap out of Iron Man. And that’s just after Downey looked all sad about losing a friend. Ah, this looks like it’s going to get heavy!
