What a year in film 2014 has been; we’ve seen some highly creative, innovative cinematic achievements come our way, some really big actor comebacks, powerful soundtracks, innovative designs, and more. Going into the 87th Academy Awards, people who fancied themselves able to predict winners, found their hobby cut out of them; there hasn’t been a more difficult competition to predict in a long time. Take Best Picture for example, every one of those movies were stunning and featured some truly magnificent performances. Though in the end, only one film could win Best Picture and instead of the common bet of Richard Linklater’s brilliant Boyhood taking the award, it ended up that Birdman was just too hard to beat.
Whiplash surprisingly – but deservedly – cleaned up many of the categories it was nominated in, clocking up three wins and beating out many of the big guns like the aforementioned Boyhood and The Judge. Memorable film The Grand Budapest Hotel clocked up 4 wins, making it the most celebrated film of the night alongside tie-breaking Birdman. Other big winners included The Imitation Game – resulting in a powerful acceptance speech from Graham Moore – and Big Hero 6, which took home Best Animated Feature.
Show highlights included an hilarious opening song from host Neil Patrick Harris, Anna Kendrick, and surprise guest Jack Black; a powerful, show-stopping performance of Best Original Song “Glory” by hip hop legend Common and piano ballad maestro John Legend, following by an even more powerful acceptance speech; and the general count of great, inspiring acceptance speeches throughout the night.
