Hunger Games‘ sequel Catching Fire held onto the Number One spot over the weekend, taking in an additional $6.75m at the local box office, followed by Bad Grandpa which held onto the Number Two position with $1.1m and Thor 2 which took in just under $900,000, returning to the number three spot.
Newcomers Carrie and One Chance both failed to ignite too much interest at the box office, sitting at numbers 5 and 4 respectively, though both received over $650,000 in their opening weekend. The rest of the weekend’s box office saw Captain Phillips, The Butler, Gravity, Enough Said and About Time rounded out the top ten.
Meanwhile in the US, Catching Fire earned the highest gross ever for a Thanksgiving weekend (Wed-Sun), with US$110.2m, taking its total to just shy of US$300m in its home country. Disney’s Thanksgiving release Frozen also set records with $US93m over the same five day period, which is the largest gross ever for a film that opened on Thanksgiving weekend. It was of course the second weekend for Fire, as it was in Australia.
Frozen is released in Austraila on Boxing Day, 26th December 2013.
