In movie news, The Bourne Identity franchise is returning with Matt Damon and Tommy Lee Jones in Bourne. No plot details have been released as yet, but it is scheduled to hit cinemas in July 2016. In TV, sadly Key & Peele are hanging up their boots after the current fifth season airs. Key reveals, “It’s not because of Comedy Central, it’s us. It was just time for us to explore other things, together and apart.” Good luck gentlemen, we’ll be watching!
What’s new in film?
Trailers
Starring Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Seth Rogen, and Anthony Mackie, The Night Before is a Christmas comedy for the big kids. Due for release in December 3, we have the usual drug, vomit, and profanity jokes that we love. The threesome come together to celebrate their last Christmas of debauchery before they become adults.
A new Vacation movie could be the best or the worst thing ever. Next gen Griswolds are coming in the form of Ed Helms and Christina Applegate. Like the original National Lampoon film, they make the trek to WalleyWorld. Chevy Chase also makes an appearance:
Freeheld is based on the true story of Laurel Hester (played by Julianne Moore) and Stacie Andree (Ellen Page). Hester becomes an activist in the LGBT civil rights movement, driven by her terminal lung cancer, and her desire to leave everything to Stacie. Already gaining Oscar buzz, the trailer is here:

Coming out this week in Australian cinemas, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. It’s time to get dazzled by Tom Cruise and his stuntman skills. Check out our review here.

Supergirl, Season 1
Supergirl, starring Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El (Superman/Kal-El’s cousin) is currently in production. Check out the trailer:
Distributed by Warner Bros., the TV series will begin in October 2015 on CBS in the US. Hopefully we’ll get access to it here in Oz too.
The X-Files
The X-Files teaser is just that, a big tease. And we have never been so excited for January 2016. Your 15 seconds of pleasure are here:
Broadcast on Fox in the US, we will see David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in a very limited six part series. The Smoking Man (William B. Davis) will also be making a grand return, along with Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi).
Festivals and Events
Melbourne International Film Festival
MIFF opened on the 30 July with Force of Destiny, which screened at the Arts Centre Melbourne, Hamer Hall. There are a stack of great films screening in ten different locations across Melbourne CBD, Melbourne Planetarium, and Grey Gardens. Go to miff.com.au for all the details. The festival runs until its closing night gala (with Mistress America) on 15 August.
In The House
Hosted by Jason ‘Jabba’ Davis and Quinny from Supanova comes a series of cult film classics screening at Event Cinemas George Street in Sydney from July through to December. First up is Akira on Friday 31 July, followed by Highlander, and Grease in September. Tickets are only $10 ($9 for Cine Buzz members).
