The new Cars 3 trailer is out and it sure looks grim

Though it is arguably the least respected franchise of the venerable Pixar stable, the Cars series has no doubt flourished at the box office. It’s no surprise then that it is now the second franchise to get a trilogy (behind Toy Story,) and today we get a brief look at the 2017 release thanks to its first teaser trailer.

You’ll notice immediately that that doesn’t remotely resemble the slapstick, family friendly fun we’re accustomed to. Cars 2 was universally panned for its overt goofiness and it appears that Disney and director Brian Fee might be trying to rectify that with a tonal shift. To put it bluntly: this Pixar film is looking grim. But the graphics are looking quite stunning…

We’ll find out whether it pays off when Cars 3 releases in Australian theatres on June 22nd, 2017.
