A detective, a DUFF and an Oscar-nominated performance dominate this week’s DVD releases. Here are our three picks of the week:
CAKE
Jennifer Aniston‘s performance in Cake earned her an Oscar nomination, and her transformation into Nina, a chronic pain sufferer dealing with the deaths of both her son and her friend Nina (Anna Kendrick), is remarkable. Also starring Chris Messina and Sam Worthington, Cake is worth a watch for Aniston’s performance alone.
The DUFF
Mae Whitman plays the titular DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) in The DUFF, a quick-witted comedy from director Ari Sandel. Whitman is fantastic as Bianca, and Robbie Amell (TV’s The Flash) works well with her as Wes, Bianca’s popular, jock neighbour who agrees to de-DUFF her. Supporting appearances by Ken Jeong and Alison Janney are a great addition to this teen rom-com.
Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Season 3
Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries is an underrated Australian gem, and the third series of this ABC favourite was released this week. Essie Davis is fantastic in this unique crime series as Phrynne Fisher, who has to not only solve mysteries in 1920s Melbourne, but also deal with the appearance of her estranged father.
All the above are now available in all good retailers.
