This Week’s DVD Release Picks: Best of the Box (5th November 2015)

This week offers an abundance of top-quality television series on DVD – perfect for that university exam-time procrastination.

THE MINDY PROJECT, SEASON 2
The Mindy Project really finds its footing in the second season. Mindy (Mindy Kaling) returns to New York after a stint in Haiti, to find that her place at Shulman and Associates isn’t quite as secure as she thought. The Mindy Project is a great portrayal of the ups and downs of keeping your professional and personal lives in balance, and Kaling is perhaps the most relateable woman on television. The show also stars Chris Messina (The Newsroom) and Ike Barinholtz (Bad Neighbours).

BROADCHURCH, SEASON 2
This gripping British drama, starring David Tennant and Olivia Coleman, has taken the world by storm, even spawning an American adaptation. Broadchurch‘s first season surrounds the death of Danny Latimer and the ripple effect that his death has on the small country town of Broadchurch; the second season follows the trial of his murderer and the changes that have occured in the lives of the Latimer and Miller families. Coleman, in particular, is phenomenal, and there are excellent supporting performances by Jodie Whitaker and Andrew Buchan.

THE WALKING DEAD, SEASONS 1-5
One of the most popular shows on the box, The Walking Dead is set in a post-apocalyptic/zomb-ocalypse world, where a group of humans must struggle to stay alive and avoid the dreaded ‘walkers’ (no zombie talk here). Five seasons in, The Walking Dead doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down any time soon, with the shocks and thrills continuing to keep audiences guessing. The sixth season is currently airing in the US, and the recent death of a main character has caused outrage and sadness across the globe.
