This Week’s DVD Release Picks: (Talented) Girls on Film (28th October 2015)

This week’s DVD releases all feature, or are about, talented young women who have gained immense fame in a short period of time.

Amy

Amy-Winehouse-biopic

Amy Winehouse’s tragic demise was a source of endless tabloid gossip, and this documentary uses much of that archival paparazzi footage, as well as home videos, to tell her story. Directed by Asif Kapadia (Senna), Amy is an intimate, sad tale about a young woman who wanted nothing more than to make good music and be loved by her family, husband, and friends. Love was what she craved, but it was also what killed her, and with audio interviews with close friends, family, her ex-husband, and management, what’s clearest of all is that Amy Winehouse was an immensely talanted young woman, and that is how she should be remembered.

Inside Amy Schumer, Seasons 1 and 2

It’s certainly been the year of Amy Schumer, and this is where it all began – her award-winning sketch show, Inside Amy Schumer. Week after week, Schumer skewers social norms, especially those related to women, with her trademark no-holds-barred style. It’s easy to see why Schumer has become so popular in 2015, and her sketch show is more of that bold comedy that audiences have fallen in love with.
